Aloha from the northwest corner!

How did the Richmond District gets its name? Was it to commemorate a historical figure? Was it named after a lost bet? Your inquiring mind is dying to know, so check out how we went from being called the Outside Lands to the Richmond District, TWICE.

Last Friday was a day of celebration as Lincoln Park Playground at Clement and 33rd Avenue officially reopened. A few hundred turned out for the event which included a special performance by the ABC Preschool choir and a momentous ribbon cutting. How many city officials does it take to open a new playground? At least one Supervisor (Eric Mar) to test the slide, and at least one chief from Rec & Park (Phil Ginsburg) to spin on the rope tree. Check out their youthful antics in the video below.

In other park news, the alleged Mt. Lake Park lurker was effectively cleared by the Richmond District police. It started with an email alert to other parents, escalated into local internet news, and ended with residents pointing fingers and debating what makes good community policing and what crosses the line. If you live in the 94115, 94118, 94121, 94129 zip codes, this is your weekend to get in free to the Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. Check out the new Extreme Mammals exhibition or just get reacquainted with the penguins.

For all you D.I.Y.’ers out there, author Billee Sharp will appear at Green Apple Books on Saturday to share her freecycling, budget-savvy, barter-better wisdom that is part of her book, Fix It, Make It, Grow It, Bake It.

Have a great weekend everyone!
