A police unit stopped to render first aid to the pedestrian who was pronounced dead at the intersection, Williams said.

9:44 AM (BCN): Two men are in custody in San Francisco this morning after allegedly firing shots outside a North Beach club and then fatally striking a pedestrian in their car while being followed by police.

The victim was identified by the medical examiner’s office as 21-year-old Luis Prieto, of San Francisco.

According to police spokesman Sgt. Wilfred Williams, officers were called to a club in the 400 block of Broadway at about 2:20 a.m. on a report of multiple shots being fired.

A preliminary investigation indicates the two men had been causing trouble at the club.
“It’s believed that these two were having issues,” said Williams.

The men left and returned in their car, Williams said. Multiple rounds were fired outside the club, possibly up into the air, he said.

No injuries were reported, and the two men sped off, according to Williams.

Police responding to the area spotted the vehicle and followed it in their patrol car.

Williams said the police car did not at that time have its siren on, but officers observed the car strike something and saw debris fly up into the air at the intersection of Vallejo and Columbus streets.

It was later determined the vehicle had struck Prieto, who was walking with his brother, Williams said. Another police unit stopped to attend to Prieto, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect vehicle continued on and ignored the police siren, which was now on, Williams said.

Police were able to catch up to the suspect vehicle in the 600 block of Lombard Street, where the two suspects had abandoned it, Williams said.

Both of the occupants were arrested nearby, Williams said. One of the men was trying to hide between cars and another had tried to walk away down the block, he said.

Two firearms were also recovered, one from inside the vehicle, according to Williams. He declined to say where the other gun was found.

The names of the suspects have not been released by police.
