11:31 AM: Mother of Appeal staffer Rain Jokinen, who lives in the area of this morning’s Muni accident, reports that

We saw the site of the crash on the way to work this morning. We also saw our mayor Gavin Newsom standing in the road drinking coffee and looking at the site as well. I was gonna snap a photo but didn’t have the camera!

Guess he is back from Hawaii!

10:41 AM: SFMTA spokesperson Judson True’s released a statement on this morning’s accident. No new information, really: they clarify that the accident happened at 12:05 this morning and confirm that the people who went to the hospital were the Muni driver, the truck driver, and five Muni passengers.

True also notes that the Muni driver has already been released from the hospital, as he begins his stint of being on “non-driving status” as the SFMAT/SFPD investigation proceeds.

6:12 AM: A crash involving a 19 Polk Muni bus and a pickup truck injured nine this morning. According to SFFD, the crash occurred at 18th and De Haro a little after midnight when the inbound (that is, traveling north on De Haro) bus collided with a pickup traveling west as they both passed through the intersection, which Google Street View indicates is a four way stop.

The collision sent the bus off the road and into some nearby bushes (ABC7 has a nice photo gallery here).

Two of those injured were treated at the scene, and the other seven, including the drivers of both vehicles, have been hospitalized. None of them are suffering life-threatening injuries, according to the fire dept.

As in Muni practice, the driver of the bus will not be taken off driving status while he’s tested for drugs and alcohol. Did someone run the stop, or just fail to yield? No one’s saying anything yet, as Muni and the SFPD’s investigation is ongoing.
