BOO from the Richmond District!

Halloween is coming fast and furious to the Richmond. We’ve got houses ready to spook and scare trick or treaters, and we’re gearing up for ghoulish parties and festivals.

Did you know the Richmond is one of the spookiest neighborhoods in San Francisco? It’s because some of our parks used to be cemeteries. Yes, you read that right, dead people used to inhabit these outside lands. Check out this short video on the history of the Richmond District cemeteries to learn more. And just where did all the bodies go? Most of them went to Colma, but others, well…watch the video to find out.

Our local restaurant Aziza is getting a lot of attention since receiving a coveted star in the Michelin 2010 Guide to Bay Area restaurants. The chef/owner was profiled in the Chronicle and food bloggers are taking notice.

I’ve been coming across some nice photos of the Richmond lately. A sunset on Geary Boulevard, a hyper-local ad on the side of the 38 Geary, and a shot of a Geary motel that looks like it was taken in 1953. I joined in the fun by contributing a shot of the Outside Lands from my window seat on Southwest Airlines.

This week’s police blotter was filled with the usual tales of iPhone thefts, burglaries and car break-ins. But nestled in it was a report of a bank robbery on the 400 block of Clement. “A male entered the bank armed with a handgun. He approached one of the tellers and demanded money. The teller complied and the suspect fled the bank.” Yikes – the bank robber is still at large.

I’ll close this week with a “Western Neighborhoods History Minute” video from Woody LaBounty at the Western Neighborhoods Project. He creates one minute videos on various topics related to the west side of the city. The clip below is on Ocean Beach. Take that, suburbanites! 😉
