Greetings from the Richmond District!
We take a lot of ribbing for our often foggy weather conditions in this corner of the city. And we bitch and moan about it too. Nevertheless, there’s something charming and homey about the fog, and when it comes down to it, we, dare I say, like it. Our friend Woody LaBounty over at the Western Neighborhoods project put together a deliciously foggy history minute – check it out below.
Speaking of fog… Next Friday, Richmond District photogs will get to show off their work at Supervisor Eric Mar’s office at City Hall. It’s part of his Photography from the Fog exhibit that will be on display for the next couple of months.
Last Saturday was Leap’s 26th Annual Sandcastle Contest on Ocean Beach. Winds were wicked that day but the elementary school kids and construction company partners did a great job with the children’s classic stories theme. Find out who won and see pics of the sandy creations.
In case you haven’t heard, the Cliff House turns 100 this year. Their owner and head chef were on TV this week talking about the history of the SF restaurant with 9 lives. And they shared the recipe for their tasty crab cakes. It’s all in this nifty little video.

We do love our live music here in the Richmond, so it’s only fitting that we get mentioned in a song. We ain’t got but three long seasons, that’s “windy,” “wet” and “cold” goes one of the lyrics. Take a listen.
And on the history tip this week, I came across some old postcards at the Alameda Antique Fair last Sunday. In the pile were ones for the Cliff House, Sutro Baths and various landmarks in Golden Gate Park. Did you know there was something called “The Donkey Path” in GGP?
A couple of weeks ago, I acquired some copies of the Richmond Banner newspaper. It was published every Friday out of its offices on 6th Avenue, and the subscription price was $1 per year. Check out what they “editorially stood for” back in 1931.
