Today’s full Board of Supervisors meeting was full of important stuff, but, since Beth‘s on a lesbian cruise, it falls on my shoulders to update y’all on Resolution 091117, aka Try To Keep Energy 92.7 Gay As All Hell The Way God Intended It. In Supespeak, the resolution is meant to encourage:
Ed Stolz, the new owner of radio station 92.7, to continue with the Community/Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender/Dance radio format that has made Energy 92.7 one of the most unique and popular radio stations in San Francisco and the Bay Area.
After hearing one person testify in support of the resolution, the Board passed the resolution unanimously. “I’m grateful my colleagues appreciate the contributions of Energy 92.7” Supervisor Dufty told the Appeal.
Dufty added that he spoke to attorney for Ed Stoltz, the station’s new owner, earlier. Dufty was told that Stoltz has received some angry calls from 92.7 fans, and while Dufty certainly didn’t advocate aggression towards Stoltz, he attempted to explain that there’s been a lot of local speculation about Stoltz’s politics.
Dufty says Stoltz’s attorney claims Stoltz is just conservative, not homophobic (as has been rumored). “I told him there’s often a correlation between the two, so it’s up to Mr. Stoltz to better define himself” said Dufty. “I have offered to meet with Mr. Stoltz,” said Dufty “but I don’t know that that’s going to happen.”
“All I can say is it seems like there hasn’t been much due diligence (on the part of the new owners) about how much this station means to San Francisco and the LGBT community,” said Dufty
Of course, this resolution is more of a gesture than an edict. The Supes can’t, like, go padlock the station doors (especially since they’re broadcasting from Palm Springs and Supervisor Mirkarimi refuses to go anywhere too hot to wear sweater vests). Hence the word “encourage” in the resolution, instead of “force” or “require.” But it’s a way to let the new owners know that folks here are serious about their gay music.
