You can go just slightly faster than the wind is blowing because you can move the kite to create power when you are travelling going down wind side ways. When you go up wind and directly downwind you will go slower than the wind is blowing . For this event we are going 15 to 30 MPH. The fastest sail craft in the world is now a kiteboard here is a video of the 50 knot (58MPH) record setting ride. http://windydevil.com/kiteboarding/reinstate-50-knot-speed-record

It's great to see the sport gaining greater visibility and acceptance. I think it's like how snowboarding hit the scene in the 80's and now is ubiquitous. The technology is changing and advancing rapidly. Along with the "C" or "Bow" kites, I also fly a ram-air closed-cell kite, so no pumping up your kite on the beach...each type of kite has its' pros and cons of course.
Kiteboarding is growing out here in the Great Lakes too...and come winter, snowkiting is great! It will be exciting to see how the sport grows.
