UPDATE: The 101-280 connector has reopened, and BART is picking up the pace. You can still expect delays for the rest of the morning, but neither avenue of transportation is as impossible as it was earlier.
Significant hassles and delays for BART riders, southbound commuters this morning:
CHP office Kevin Kroncke tells us that a garbage truck overturned on 101 near Alamany at 5:30 this morning. For tow trucks to get in, the southbound 101-280 connector had to be closed at around 6:45, with no word yet on when it’ll reopen. That, and the usual rainy-weather car crashes make freeway travel a crawl this morning.
BART trains running to and from San Francisco are running 30 to 40 minutes late, because of a power problem on one of the two tracks in the Transbay Tube this morning, BART spokesman Linton Johnson said. According to BCN:
Johnson said the issue is with a faulty electric third rail on a section of the track that usually takes trains into San Francisco, and was
noticed on a train that came from Richmond.Trains from Richmond and Dublin/Pleasanton are not being allowed into San Francisco, according to Johnson, who said passengers on those trains must switch at either the Bayfair or MacArthur stations to a train coming from Pittsburg/Bay Point or Fremont.
The problem is forcing BART to use the track usually reserved for trains bound for the East Bay to send trains in both directions, Johnson said.
He said backups for trains headed to the East Bay from San Francisco are “pretty significant” because priority is being given to trains headed in the commute direction toward San Francisco.
Crews are in the Transbay Tube to try to repair the problem now. BART does not know how long that should take, and when regular service will resume.
