What's SFPD Supposed to be Doing on Muni?
UPDATE: We got our hands on 2001 SFPD General Order for BIP (that's Bus Inspection Program), which lays out what Muni's supposed to be getting...

If you read the SFPD report for the Taraval Station, sometimes you'll read a report of a person getting an ipod or iphone stolen, and the police respond, but usually by grabbing the suspects once they've left the bus or train. Which is what they are supposed to do anywyay (police catch bad guys and throw 'em in jail).
it's a bit much what Gavin Newsom is doing...voters wanted that money to go to projects to make muni more stable and work better, NOT pay for big salaries for managers and "executives" at the Mayor's office and around town. Gavin's "green" cred is out the window.

Saw a cop boarding the 22 on upper Fillmore this morning. First one I've seen in a while.

This was a few years back, but I used to see uniformed officers on the L-Taraval. They usually got off at West Portal if they were already aboard when I boarded, or boarded there. Used to see a K-9 team at West Portal as well, but I don't remember if they got on the trains.

I've periodically seen SFPD officers boarding a bus, riding a few blocks and getting off. They appear to record their actions, so there may be a record of police-on-muni activity at SFPD. I've often seen them on lines that need the least police surveillance, like the 45 Union, and seldom on lines that most need it.

i see them a few time a month on the T-Willie Brown (T-Third) heading south into Bayview-HP. this generally happens on the commute home at night.

Does the SFPD bill anyone else for policing services? Do businesses get billed if the police investigate a robbery at their store?

I used to see cops on buses all the time, in like 2001-03. Mostly on lines like the 22, which are surrogate SFUSD school buses in morning & mid-afternoon (another issue entirely.)
I haven't seen police on Muni in at least five years (was actually just reminded by this article that I used to see them at all), and I ride a wide variety of lines almost every day. Weird. IMHO, needed most on the Van Ness & Mission lines and the 9-San Bruno. (For tagging abatement if nothing else.)

Excluding opening day on the T-Line and the day after the London Tube bombing, I can count the number of times on one finger.
It's not just the SFPD who's pulling this either. General Hospital is taking another $2.5 million out of Muni, the HR Dept. is charging another $1.17 million over the original budget.
All together, the various City Departments have added $27 million in work orders to the MTA since Prop A passed. Does anyone want to guess how funding Prop A added to the MTA?

Can't say I have seen an officer on Muni, but I haven't been riding long. However, there was a time recently on the 14 when a high school girl in a puffy jacket threatened to kick my ass for dropping my purse. Doesn't sound scary, but I was pretty bugged out, and felt in danger.

I can't imagine why a post about SFPD and MUNI would spark such discussion.

In general I've not seen cops on the buses for about two years. More recently I've seen them, actually a lot of them, and regularly, on the T line.
Reading raw memos is always enlightening. Amazing illustration of how optempo is characterized by the paperwork involved - and keep in mind this is the SF Flintstone/Keystone Kops, so it's real paper. Every "inspection" is just another "evolution" in the patrol cycle, to coin the parlance of another large uniformed organization.

No. No. No. No. No.
A thousand times NO!
I've lived in the city for 10 years. I've taken MUNI several times a day every day since then. I've never even seen a cop take MUNI to get to work.
