When you think of Al’s Attire, you probably think of quality custom clothing and shoes. But now you’re also going to have to think about beautiful, handmade bags.

Think clean, simple, sophisticated lines like early Vuitton, or Coach before it went to the toilet. The pre-made bags come in gorgeous colors like tan, dark brown, avocado green and black and they start at $220.

But come on, it’s Al’s, where anything can be done to your exact specifications. You can have your custom bag made in almost any color and/or texture from alligator to printed calf hair. You also get to pick the fabric for the interior lining and the name they put on the tag inside.

I went with a light blue leather (once you own a light blue purse you realize it goes with everything, and it’s got that 1960’s Chanel-gone-granny look that I love. My first blue bag came from the estate of vintage SFer Nancy Dollar. I drool just remembering it). For the interior I picked a warm brown plaid. I was pulled toward a white with black paisley but, in my world, white is just the color of pre-coffee stain.

My perfect, one of a kind bag (unless someone else has the exact same taste) cost me $289 before tax. if you can find a custom made, handmade leather bag for that price elsewhere in San Francisco I want to hear about it.

AND, in a series I hope I’m beginning right now: the Shop Dog: At Al’s, she’s a one year old chihuahua/poodle mix who likes parks, sleeping and baby talk.
