Television is, in one way, slowing down in this post-Memorial Day week. But in another, things are picking up speed in the summer TV season; you know, those shows that aren’t quite good enough for the fall, but are just dumb enough to be a vague distraction from the summer heat, (at least in areas that actually have summer heat).

In the slowing down department, we have tonight’s season finale of “Cougar Town,” (and yes, this time it actually is the finale). David Arquette–the former Mr. Courtney Cox himself–makes a guest appearance in this one hour episode that may or may not contain a wedding. 8 P.M. on ABC.

On Wednesday, May 30th, this season of “America’s Next Top Model” comes to an end, and none too soon. It was easily the most boring and just plain dumb season–sorry, cycle–of “ANTM” to date. Tyra, you should just put this dog of a show out of our misery.  9 P.M. on the CW

Speaking of dogs, also on the 30th, comes the premiere of “Dogs In the City,” a new reality show about a dog “guru” in New York City. Commence with the “Sex and the City” and bitches jokes in 5…4…3…(Watch it at 8 P.M. on CBS.)

On Thursday, June 1st, reality TV enters the world of professional ballet, with the backstage series “Breaking Pointe,” centered on dancers with Salt Lake City’s Ballet West. It probably won’t be quite as exciting as Black Swan, (or Showgirls, for that matter), but it you like ballet, it’s worth a look. 8 P.M. on the CW.

On Friday, June 1st, “Best Friends Forever” fans can bid a melancholy goodbye to the excellent but cancelled series, as NBC airs the show’s final two episodes, starting at 10 P.M. So long “BFF.” You will truly be my BFF!!

And finally, on Sunday, June 3rd, it’s that most useless of all awards shows, “The MTV Movie Awards,” and, once again, it is being hosted by the always annoying Russell Brand. I just hope the cast of Bridesmaids, Emma Stone, and maybe Ryan Gosling can rise above the nonsense and bring the funny. 9 P.M. on MTV.
