Last night’s “Golden Globes” was a rather boring ceremony. Aside from that one moment when Julianne Moore looked like a complete deer in the headlights when her teleprompter went off, and some jokes about Jodie Foster’s “Beaver,” really there wasn’t much memorable about it. Let’s hope television offerings this week are a little more exciting.
Tonight looks hopeful, with the premiere of J.J. Abrams latest television puzzler, “Alcatraz,” which, yes, is partially about our own little island of mystery. According to this show, a bunch of prisoners just up and disappeared from the penitentiary back in 1963, and are showing up now, unaged, and acting spooky. Jorge “Hurley” Garcia is on hand as a paranormal investigator, and some of the pilot was shot on our San Francisco streets. Watch the two-hour premiere at 8 P.M. on Fox.
Tuesday, January 17th, brings the return of “Justifield” at 10 P.M. on FX. Timothy Olyphant and his giant hat are back, but sadly, Margo Martindale’s Mags Bennett won’t be rising from the grave for season three.
Someone who will be returning from the grave is Steven Tyler, who will once again be judging “American Idol,” alongside Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson. Nope, this show just won’t die, and why should it? I mean, last season’s winner has just been rocking the singles charts non-stop since his win, right?
Well, maybe they’ll make up for that fiasco this season. Just pray that Steven Tyler keeps his shoes on, because I saw his naked feet on the premiere of “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” and I was scarred for life. Watch the auditions begin on Wednesday, January 18th, 8 P.M. on Fox.
On Thursday, January 19th, FX will try to match the success it has had with its animated series “Archer” with the premiere of a new animated comedy called “Unsupervised,” set in a suburban high school. Justin Long and David Hornsby provide voices to some of the show’s outcast teens. It premieres at 10:30 P.M. on FX.
Saturday, January 21st brings the welcome return of Karl Pilkington in another season of “An Idiot Abroad,” this one dubbed “The Bucket List.” Once again he’ll travel around the world, this time completing a list of things everyone should do before they die–at least according to Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. I’m not sure some of those items would be on anyone’s list, but of course, no one’s going to tell Karl that. 10 P.M. on the Science Channel.
Finally, on Sunday, January 22nd, “Prime Suspect” gets its not-too-fond farewell, as the final two episodes will air starting at 9 P.M. on NBC. So long Detective Jane. We hardly knew ya.
