This post is about the newest shows on Thursday night TV, and that means we have to talk about NBC’s “Whitney,” as painful a topic as that may be.
Now, it certainly isn’t the worst sitcom on TV, (no comment), nor is it the worst NEW sitcom on TV, (that honor goes to ABC’s “Last Man Standing,” a show so egregious, this is the first and last time I will ever deign to mention it). But it is certainly the worst sitcom on NBC’s Thursday night line-up, and its placement amongst some good (and one great) sitcoms just makes it seem all the worse.
And to add insult to injury, that one great sitcom (“Community,” of course), is being benched midseason, while “Whitney,” with its laugh-track, and lazy “men are from Mars, women have vaginas” jokes, will remain on the air, albeit on a different night. So, the best that can be said about “Whitney” is at least it will no longer be tarnishing a good comedic line-up.
And because none of those new Thursday night shows are worth watching, I will instead include a clip from the one show that might be. And I’ll try to stop crying over its fate.
“Prime Suspect” follows “Whitney” which means I probably think it’s better than it is, again, just in comparison. But really, it doesn’t deserve the title “Prime Suspect,” or any kind of association with the original series, and even though I do kind of like Maria Bello’s character, there is nothing else about the show to distinguish it from any other number of cops and crime dramas out there. (Except maybe for that hat.)
Not that any of that matters, as the show is, essentially, already dead.
Speaking of indistinguishable crime shows, I gave up on “Person of Interest” after three weeks because no matter the actors, or the creative forces behind it, it can not escape that dull, rusty finish that gives all CBS dramas a feeling of interchangeability.
Which leaves us with the CW’s “The Secret Circle.” I only have room for one drama about supernatural teens in my life, and that show is “The Vampire Diaries.” (Although this entire season is still sitting on my TiVo, unwatched, so maybe I don’t have as much room for it in my life as I thought.)
But I am curious to hear from anyone who does watch “The Secret Circle” about what they think of it. Because I certainly am not hearing anyone talking about it anywhere else!
