Trollhunter – Lumiere
A Blair Witch Project style mockumentary wherein the setting moves from Maryland to Norway, and the witches are replaced by trolls. These aren’t the trolls that haunt forums and blog comments, or cute trolls with spikey hair, (though, that could be fun). No, these are the trolls of Norse mythology, and they are big, ugly, and smelly. There’s a really funny and sometimes thrilling movie in here, but the material is stretched way too thin, and I couldn’t help but wish it had been about 45 minutes shorter.
Mr. Popper’s Penguins – Everywhere
I didn’t used to have a problem with Jim Carrey. I dig slapstick and stupidity in general. But recently he’s begun to look a bit like an aging meth addict, and he gives me the heebie-jeebies. If I had kids, I don’t know that I’d want to take them to a movie featuring a creepy meth face and a bunch of CGI penguins. But maybe that’s just me.
The Art of Getting By – Everywhere
Freddie Highmore and Emma “Julia’s Niece; Eric’s Daughter” Roberts star in this high school comedy about a student who has managed to make it all the way to his senior year without doing any real studying or homework. Of course he’s a white, well-off, privileged New York teen, so really, why should he bother? Wait…is that not the point of this movie? Whoops.
The Trip – Clay
Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon travel the countryside eating at Britain’s best restaurants in this largely improvised comedy that is actually an edited version of a much longer television series. Until that series is released on DVD in the States, though, this is your only option to see it. Damn.
Beautiful Boy – Century San Francisco Centre 9
Bummer drama about an unhappily married couple who must deal with the aftermath of their son’s university shooting spree. Summer blockbuster material! Michael Sheen and Maria Bello star. I like Maria Bello’s acting just fine, but always have some trouble watching her because I had a friend whose boyfriend left her to date Maria Bello. This should, of course, have no influence on anyone deciding to see this movie.
Just Like Us – Lumiere
Comedian Ahmed Ahmed’s documentary about a comedy concert tour through the Middle East and the U.S. aims to prove that, yes, Muslims have a sense of humor, and can tell and laugh at a joke…just like us. There are a lot of comedians in this thing, so check out the full list here.
