Remember the third grade? Pogs, magic cards, four-square, and, most importantly, yo-yos. Well, for some, the significance of yo-yos extended far beyond the playground. The Triple Crown of Yo-Yo has become, they say, the premier yo-yo contest series in the United States.
Three back to back events will determine who will become the Bay Area Classic Champion, in the hopes of being named the Triple Crown Grand Champion in July… a title only available to the highest-scoring player in all three events: the Bay Area Classic in San Francisco, the East Coast Classic in Boston, and the Midwest Classic in Chicago.
From 10 am until 4 pm in Washington Square Park this Saturday, hopefuls will gather to compete for the title of yo-yo champion. Some of the top competitors on the West Cost will congregate in North Beach to test their skill, swap tricks, pick up the latest gear, and compete for more than $2,000 in cash and prizes.
Professional players will be on-hand to teach inexperienced yo-yoers the fundamentals of the sport. Admission is free for spectators, and anyone can buy or borrow a yo-yo to learn how to play!
So, put on your retro gear, grab your retainer and your lunch box, and head down to Washington Square Park this weekend for a trip down memory lane.
