Unfortunately, photographers were only allowed to shoot and watch the first three songs of each set, before we were shuffled out. So these are just impressions of the show, please don’t read this as a full-fledged review.
The mood was set for the night when the first twangs of “Breathe” by Prodigy filled the HP Pavilion. And it was decidedly going to be loud and aggressive. The godfathers of warehouse rave assaulted the nearly full arena in San Jose with strobes and smoke machines, very much fusing the rock and electronic scenes like Linkin Park has been doing for so many years.
During dozens of different Linkin Park chants, the lights finally dropped a few minutes after 9pm. Thousands screamed as the six walked on to stage and kicked in to “Faint” – it seemed the entire floor section knew every single word and sang it back it in complete ecstasy. They then went in to “Lying From You” and “Given Up” with much the same reaction.
Say what you want about the band, it’s hard to top their live shows and the passion of their fans. Best friends grasping each other, screaming their hearts out along with Chester was a very, very common sight.
