showart.jpgThe SF Playhouse is inviting people to come text, tweet and Facebook during the July 13th performance of The Fantasticks, a re-imagined version of the world’s longest running musical. Ok, weird.

Why? According to the press release sent to the Appeal, Artistic Director Bill English says “We thought this would be an exciting way to combine technology with the arts…and you get to do something you’re not suppose to do in the theatre!”

It’s a sweet marketing strategy, but I’m not so sure that updating your status during the show will enhance your experience of the show. Then again, you might be one of those people who can’t wait to make a comment and must whisper it to me immediately. This would provide a quieter, more constructive way for you to instantly share your impression.

Plus, it’s a free way to see the show.

If you are interested, you’ll have to apply to do it. The press release calls for “text-perts” so you best be a serious. They will also give you a funny title – “SF Playhouse Plugger” and you will sit in a special “tweet seats” section. Here are the requirements:

– Be 15 or older and a Bay Area resident
– Be available to attend the Tuesday, July 13th 7 PM performance
– Have an active Twitter and Facebook account
– Have a portable text device that can go two hours without charging

What: Pluggers Night at “The Fantasticks”
Where: SF Playhouse, 533 Sutter St.
When: Tuesday, July 13th 7:00 PM
Cost: Free, if you’re invited. To get an invitation, send your name, phone number, city, and link to your Twitter and Facebook accounts to Dan Meagher, Director of Marketing, at Dan@SFPlayhouse.org
