Weekend holidays can suck, because (at least things were this way the last time I had honest work) some workplaces try to screw you by not giving you any days off.
Well, “screw” may be too strong a term — HR consultant Lori Dorn* tells me that “CA employers are not required to give holidays off unless it’s a union shop and agreed upon by a collective bargaining agreement” and that “holidays are a benefit rather than a requirement.”
That brings us to the upcoming legal, public holiday, July 4. Since it’s on a Sunday, “for most Federal employees, Monday, July 5, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes.”
But it’s not that simple for the rest of us: a quick survey I took of my few friends who still have regular person jobs gave me three businesses that were giving employees the day off on Friday, July 3, and four that were taking Monday, July 5 off.
How about you? What day, if any, are you getting off to celebrate our nation’s independence? Of course I am asking this because I am interested, but also because we are trying to figure out how hard we have to work over those days. Details appreciated!
