All I knew was that there’d be a haircut for charity.

Which is how I found myself at the Northstar sitting on a stool surrounded by piles of human hair. It actually ended up being pretty fun, albeit weird. Two long time bartenders of North Beach’s Northstar were shaving their beloved long hair and moustache respectively to raise money for the Semper Fi Fund, an organization that supports wounded Marines.

It took forever.

Anyone who ponied up $10 got to shave a slice and we sat around watching a host of regulars chop an inch at a time. $3,800 later, it was time to shoot our video, the preceding 2 minute list of happenings this weekend.

I’ve never read from a teleprompter before and we were using a laptop balanced on a box of crates placed below the camera. My first few run-throughs, I looked like I have a lazy eye and a severe speech impediment. The VidSF guys were huddled by the camera.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“Technical difficulties” the replied.

When pressed, they revealed my reading of the teleprompter was making me look like a psychopath. And no one wants to hear activity ideas for the weekend from a psychopath.

Those kind and patient gentlemen waited while I attempted to look into the camera, lower my voice, sit up straight, memorize the script and ignore the hair at my feet. The result is our final effort and my first attempt at presenting this weekend’s events. Please bear with me while I get better at this. Maybe next time, there won’t be any hair…
