This was the first time I went to Outside Lands and I have to say I was impressed by some very SF sensibilities…
Green/eco stance. Cans for Trash/Recycling/Composting available everywhere. Most of these trash stations were also staffed by people who helped you sort the garbage. By the third day I was a pro. All the food booths used compostable dishes/cups/cutlery–so almost everything I had to throw away was compostable.
Good quality food. I kind of went on and on about this because I love to eat so much. But you could get burgers made from happy cows, eat all vegan, or get fancy and precious if you wanted to. Too many good food booths, not enough meals in three days to try them all…
Friday: the weather was truly the star. Warm into the evening. The sky was magical. I felt like I was on vacation. I only wish I could have spent all Friday at the fest instead of just catching mostly just Pearl Jam.
Saturday: also very nice. Transitioned into cool weather by evening but also a lovely day. The Festival always seemed well attended but never overwhelmingly crowded.
Sunday: more typical SF weather (that is, freezing) but okay. I was never terribly excited by any of the musical acts but I ended up really enjoying myself and even getting to know some new (to me) bands that I’ll be checking out in the future. And, just fantastic people watching, corporate tents, booths, shopping–lots of activities to help keep one distracted in between bands.
Plenty o’ porta potties spread throughout festival. Plenty of staffing. I give a nod to the organizers here.
The food, people watching and hanging out in the nice weather made it all seem worthwhile to me, (but my ticket was free). Next year, if the line-up of bands is better, well, I’d even consider sucking it up and buying a ticket.
