I love high heels, but don't wear them much since we moved to a place up a hill. Walking uphill is tricky in heels, but walking downhill is ridiculous. When I really want to wear heels to an event now, I pack them in a bag and wear flats down to catch a cab or a bus. All cities are intrinsically dirty, but why should you allow that into your life as an excuse to lower the bar? San Francisco isn't a dirtier city than Manhattan, London, Madrid, or Paris. What separates cosmopolitan people from urbanites is attention to detail and self-awareness, regardless of the environment. I refuse to dress like most San Franciscans. Going to TJ's doesn't mean that I have to look as though I'm trekking the Appalachian Trail. Also, I'm really over San Francisco's four pastels; black, grey, khaki, and hunter green. And please, leave the camouflage clothing to the serial killers....

As with N.F. I'm not really sure the purpose of the article? I would have to side with N.F. in all regards... I am a native San Franciscan who has lived all over the world; am in my 60's and very comfortable in my 'own skin'. I am happily married and still have women and college age ladies trying to hit on me. I am an avid and active SCUBA Instructor, love the out doors and to travel to places I haven't been to. Today there are tons of gorgeous women " of a certain age" around that would have been relegated to their swan song just 30 years ago. It is refreshing to see women embracing their age as they prove it is possible to look young based on how you feel inside. Helen Mirren, Ali Macgraw, Joy Behar, Chet, Tina Turner, Diahann Carroll... the list of Mmes. is too broad to suggest they're all Shelly Winters....
