I've always said that what we really need in this city is a public plaza with a good view of an adjacent gas station. And voila, the city answered my call.

It has a view of TWO adjacent gas stations! Not to mention the freeway that is Market. Ah, scenic San Francisco.

If they do make the plaza permanent, what's going to happen to the tracks that feed into the Twin Peaks Tunnel?

@be_devine and @Matt Baume - Keep in mind that this is just a test location. And at this point any steps taken in creating additional public space is better than doing nothing, right? It might help take some of the overflow during gatherings held across the street at Harvey Milk Plaza. And the Castro Theatre is just around the corner. This could be a great place to hang out with a Hot Cookie (take that however you wish) after a show. Now if only all these plazas were designated as places where outdoor drinking was allowed...

@Whole Wheat Toast - All light rail will pass through the plaza. It's only automotive traffic that will be blocked. And it's also worth noting that no parking places will be lost in this particular instance.

Twitter has hooked me on @'ing people.

It is nice to see this get "tested" first so they can really figure out how to make that area really shine. I've always thought it was under-utilized and had potential for a really cool entrance to Castro Street etc. Let's hope after this test run that the SF propensity for talking a project to death takes leave, and something gets done!

@Jimmy - I kid. I live a few blocks away from 17th and Castro and I think the proposed plaza is a much better use of the space than right now. I do, however, wish we could get rid of Chevron. Maybe turn that space into the Cafe's outdoor dance floor.
