1906quake.jpgThe U.S. Geological Survey is reporting an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.1 struck Tuesday evening in Santa Clara County.

According to the USGS, at 8:22 p.m. the temblor originating from the Calaveras Fault shook an area in the east foothills near the Calaveras Reservoir.

The quake, which had a depth of 4.8 miles, was centered about 5 miles northeast of Milpitas and 10 miles east-southeast of Fremont, according to the USGS.

In the past week, two other magnitude 2.0 or larger seismic events have occurred along this segment of the Calaveras Fault.

Monday night--almost exactly 24 hours before Tuesday night's quake--a magnitude 2.1 quake rippled through the foothills from an area near Joseph D. Grant County Park.

On Friday, a magnitude 2.5 temblor occurred along a segment of the fault between the park and the reservoir.
