8:51pm:Police have booked and charged an 18-year-old man named Phillip Stewart with murder after a shooting on Sunday near Union Square that left a German tourist dead and four two other people injured, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department said.
The shooting occurred at about 9 p.m. in the 400 block of Mason Street. When officers arrived, they found a large crowd in the area and three people who had been shot, police said.
Mechthild Schroeer, a 50-year-old resident of Minden, Germany, died from her injuries. A 15-year-old boy and 19-year-old woman were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Both are expected to survive, police said.
Police detained five suspects after witnesses provided officers with descriptions of the shooters.
Stewart was one of those suspects. He now faces murder charges.
The other four, two juveniles and two adults, have been released pending further investigation, San Francisco police officer Samson Chan said.
The shooting appears to have begun as an altercation in the area, Sgt. Troy Dangerfield said. The victims are not believed to have been the intended targets, he said.
A second shooting happened at about 1:55 a.m. today in front of 1015 Folsom, a club located at Folsom and Harriet streets, police said.
Two women were shot in their torsos and taken to a local hospital.
Updates on their condition were not immediately available.
11:48am: Police have detained five people in connection with a shooting Sunday night that left a German tourist dead and two others injured near Union Square, San Francisco police Sgt. Troy Dangerfield said.
The shooting happened shortly after 9 p.m. in the 400 block of Mason Street.
The medical examiner’s office has identified the victim as Mechthild Schroeer, a 50-year-old resident of Minden, Germany.
Dangerfield said the shooting appears to have begun as an altercation in the area and that investigators believe the victim was caught in the crossfire.
The other victims, a man and a woman, were taken to a local hospital. They are expected to survive their injuries.
The five suspects were detained early this morning and were still being questioned at around 11:15 a.m., Dangerfield said.
The shooting was followed by a second shooting in front of 1015 Folsom, a club located at Folsom and Harriet streets, at about 1:55 a.m. today.

12:45am: One woman is dead after three people were shot in San Francisco blocks from Union Square Sunday night, a San Francisco police spokesman said.
The shooting took place sometime between 9 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. in the 400 block of Mason Street near the Ruby Skye nightclub, Sgt. Troy Dangerfield said.
The other two victims – a man and a woman – were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, he said.
Investigators are still searching for suspects and collecting information, Dangerfield said, but the nightclub did not play a role in the violence because it was closed Sunday.
