Two people remained in critical condition this afternoon after they were injured when an out-of-control sport utility vehicle crashed into a shaded area next to a bus shelter in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley neighborhood this morning.
The crash was reported at about 9:35 a.m. near a San Francisco Municipal Railway stop at San Bruno and Arleta avenues, where commuters had gathered to wait for buses in a shaded area between the transit stop and an apartment complex, San Francisco police spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.
A 24-year-old woman driving a gray Ford Explorer south on San Bruno Avenue has told police the SUV seemed to lose power, causing her to lose control and drive off the roadway near Arleta Avenue.
The SUV crashed into a fence and then struck a cluster of five people waiting in the shade.
All five victims, one man and four women ranging in age from 30 to 80, were taken to San Francisco General Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Rachael Kagan said.
As of 4 p.m., two of the victims were in critical condition and the other three were in serious condition, Kagan said.
The driver was not injured in the crash and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.
“She was extremely emotional and upset,” San Francisco fire Lt.
Mindy Talmadge said.
