11:49 AM: A female Internal Revenue Service criminal investigations special agent shot and wounded a male suspect attempting to rob her near a housing complex in San Francisco’s Hunters Point neighborhood overnight, police and an IRS spokeswoman said.
The shooting happened at about midnight in the 100 block of Marlin Court, according to police spokesman Sgt. Troy Dangerfield.
Dangerfield said two male suspects approached the agent and attempted a robbery.
At some point the agent fired a gun at the suspects, hitting one in the torso, Dangerfield said. The wounded suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.
The names of the agent and the arrested suspect have not yet been released.
Police detained a second person at the scene but Dangerfield said that person has not yet been arrested.
IRS spokeswoman Special Agent Arlette Lee said the agent involved in the shooting was on duty at the time. Police had initially said the agent was off-duty.
Authorities would not say what the agent was doing in the area at the time.

She said IRS criminal investigation agents generally focus on financial crimes including money laundering and Ponzi schemes, but said she could not discuss the case this agent was investigating.
She said agents are on call 24 hours.
“It is not unusual for IRS agents to be out at different times of the morning or evening,” Lee said.
Lee said IRS special agents carry firearms but could not immediately confirm that the agent involved in the shooting had fired a service weapon.
5:39 AM: An off-duty officer involved in an early morning attempted robbery and shooting in San Francisco’s Bayview district today was an agent with the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations division, according to IRS Criminal Investigations Special Agent Arlette Lee.
At about midnight, two suspects approached the off-duty agent in the 100 block of Marlin Court and attempted to rob him, said San Francisco police Sgt. Troy Dangerfield.
The agent fired at the suspects as they fled after the attempted robbery, shooting one in the torso, Dangerfield said. The injured suspect was arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment, Dangerfield said.
Police are conducting an ongoing investigation of the incident and continue to hunt for the second suspect who fled the scene, he said.
