Driver Accused Of Killing Masonic Cyclist Hit With Vehicular Manslaughter, Drunk Driving, Hit And Run Charges
Prosecutors today charged a 36-year-old Oakland man with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated for an alleged hit-and-run crash Friday night in San Francisco that killed a bicyclist.
According to police and prosecutors, 21-year-old Nils Linke, who was visiting the U.S. from Germany, was biking south on Masonic Avenue near Turk Street at about 10:40 p.m. Friday when an older-model Mercedes-Benz going in the same direction struck him from behind.
The driver of the Mercedes, Joshua Calder, allegedly drove away from the scene afterward, prosecutors said.
Witnesses gave police a description of the car, and officers found it and arrested Calder about two blocks away.
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Calder is facing charges of drunken driving and hit-and-run.
Calder, who remains in custody on $500,000 bail, was arraigned on the charges this morning in San Francisco Superior Court.
He is scheduled to return to court Friday for plea entry and a bail hearing.
