San Francisco police were called to a fight outside a South of Market nightclub early Sunday morning that may have involved as many as 30 people, police said today.
Police are investigating whether the 3:30 a.m. fight outside the 1015 Folsom club is connected to the stabbing of a 26-year-old man who turned up at Highland Hospital in Oakland about an hour later, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.
Esparza said a friend of the victim told police that the victim had been involved in a fight at a club at Sixth and Folsom streets, where 1015 Folsom is located.
The victim suffered a puncture wound to the chest and underwent surgery. Further details about his condition were not immediately available today.
Esparza said most of the people involved in the fight were gone by the time officers arrived. A 34-year-old man was found at the scene with lacerations on his head but refused medical treatment. No arrests were made.
Police are asking for anyone who witnessed the fight to contact them.
Other recent violence near San Francisco nightclubs has prompted one club to be shuttered and city officials to propose tougher regulations on club activity.
A Feb. 7 shooting outside the Suede nightclub near Fisherman’s Wharf left one man dead and four others injured. Suede has since closed. On Feb. 19, a shooting near a nightclub in North Beach was followed by a high-speed police chase and a fatal hit-and-run.
On April 11, one man was fatally shot and three others injured in a parking lot near several South of Market nightclubs just after closing time.
