Anyone remember the election? Although the turnout was dismal, there was at least one memorable discovery at the polls: the fact that in San Francisco, six registered sex offenders were using their homes as polling places. Lawmakers apparently watched the CBS 5 report that broke this and took notice of something many of them didn’t even realize was considered completely legal in our state.
Some, like a few commenters on our previous article on the topic decry the targeting or stigmatization of people labeled as sex offenders. However, San Diego Representative Nathan Fletcher seems less concerned about that issue, and was quite vocal regarding his worries about the safety of polling places in which many high school students volunteer.
Fletcher believes the problem can be easily amended without legislation. Senator Elaine Alquist of Santa Clara County would like to take things further, and believes such legislation preventing this is necessary. She plans to add the issue to her agenda stating that she “certainly will work hard to see that the legislature this coming year does something about this issue. Some things are really difficult around the capitol. This should not be one of them.”
