“Something’s up” began the email sent to me last night by the Appeal’s own Matt Baume. “Six fire trucks with ladders up at Golden Gate and Lyon. People on roof on north side of Golden Gate videotaping.”
And something was, indeed, up: SF Weekly reports that a fire was reported at 1922 Golden Gate at 11:09 last night, and that at 11:21 an elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Weekly says the man has been identified, but his name has yet to be released. They also report that arson investigators believe the fire was accidental.
The Weekly updates: The victim was a 73-year-old man named Iris Evans, and the fire was limited to his room, located in the back of the building.
