April11.jpgDavid Miles, the “Godfather of Skate,” wowed a crowd of Lincoln High School students visiting San Francisco City Hall on Wednesday by executing a quick pirouette in his sequined skates as a teaser to promote this weekend’s Sunday Streets event.

The event will run from Stanyan Street through Golden Gate Park, and then along the Great Highway from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard.

This Sunday, San Francisco will be one of one of 1,319 cities worldwide participating in city-sponsored street closures to celebrate World Health Day, which was officially Wednesday, according to the World Health Organizaton’s Web site.

Miles said he’s most excited to skate on the newly paved portion of JFK Drive, which he says promises to be “baby-back smooth.”

The World Health Day campaign, titled “1,000 Cities, 1,000 Lives,” is the first of its kind, according to the event’s coordinator in San Francisco, Susan King. It is meant to promote physical activity and healthy behavior.

This will be the second Sunday Streets in San Francisco this year.

Tom Radulovich, executive director of the event’s sponsor, Livable City, said Sunday Streets is part of the city’s efforts to bring residents into contact with nature.

“As Bay Areans, we’ve always been very proud of our proximity to nature,” he said.

The Lincoln High students cheered enthusiastically when David Chiu asked if they would be attending the event Sunday.

San Mateo County and South San Francisco will also be holding street-closure events this weekend, King said.
