sfpd_crimescene.jpgTwo men were killed in separate murders this weekend in San Francisco’s Mission and Bayview districts, a police spokesman said today.

The most recent killing happened at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday when Juan Mendez Hernandez was stabbed to death in the 1100 block of Florida Street in the Mission, San Francisco police Officer Boaz Mariles said.

No suspects have been arrested and police are still investigating whether the stabbing was gang-related, Mariles said.

At about 7 p.m. Saturday, 20-year-old Stephen Powell was fatally shot while standing in the doorway of a home in the first block of Garlington Court in the Bayview, Mariles said.

Powell was also pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting is believed to be gang-related. No suspects are in custody.

The two killings bring the city’s homicide total this year to 17.

At this time last year, there had been 15 murders in San Francisco.
