1:53 PM: A lockdown at an elementary school in San Francisco’s Bayview District has been lifted after police completed a search for an alleged gunman and determined the situation was safe, a police spokesman said.
At 10:19 a.m., nine or 10 shots were fired near the intersection of Keith Street and Newcomb Avenue, about a block from George Washington Carver Elementary School.
Officers responded and began searching for a suspect described as a black male, about 18 years old, with a green baseball cap and dreadlocks, Officer Boaz Mariles said.
The school was placed on lockdown. Classes continued inside, but no one was allowed to enter or exit the building, San Francisco Unified School District spokeswoman Gentle Blythe said.
The lockdown was lifted at about 12:40 p.m.
Blythe said the lockdown was just a precaution and that school staff members are familiar with the procedure because police activity in the area is fairly common.
“The school is really a safe haven in that neighborhood for those children,” she said.
“Violence around the school has never entered the school, that I know of.”
No injuries were reported after the shots were fired, but a parked car was hit, Mariles said.
Officers had detained several subjects for questioning and were talking to them at about 1 p.m.
11:23 AM: A San Francisco elementary school is on lockdown this morning while officers search for a gunman in the Bayview District, a police spokesman said.
At 10:19 a.m., police received reports of nine or 10 shots fired in the 1300 block of Keith Street, near George Washington Carver Elementary School, Officer Boaz Mariles said.
Officers responded and began searching for a black male suspect, 18 years old, with a green baseball cap and dreadlocks.
The school was locked down at 10:23 a.m. due to its proximity to the search area, Mariles said. As of 11:10 a.m. the school remained on lockdown and police were providing security.
No injuries have been reported.
