sffd_firefighters.jpgA middle-aged man suffered a compound fracture to his leg and hypothermia while he was stranded on a cliff at Lands End in San Francisco overnight, a San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman said.

The man, who appears to be homeless, had been hiking in the area when he slipped on a wet trail Monday night and fell down onto a ledge near the Lincoln Park Golf Course, fire Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.

He was found this afternoon after a hiker heard him calling for help.

Emergency personnel were able to reach him by foot and put him in a stretcher, and a California Highway Patrol helicopter arrived a little before 2 p.m. to take him to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
