Police-Line-Tape-Do-Not-Cross-psd6657.pngEight people were injured in a crash on 19th Avenue in San Francisco’s Sunset District that brought traffic to a halt during today’s afternoon commute, a police spokesman said.

Police Officer Samson Chan said a gold Ford Taurus was heading south on 19th Avenue when it ran a red light at Taraval Street, crashed into a vehicle in the intersection and then jumped the median, striking four other cars heading north on 19th.

Chan said the driver of the Taurus is an elderly man and that police are investigating whether he suffered a medical problem prior to the crash.

Nineteenth Avenue was closed in both directions at Taraval Street, Chan said at about 5 p.m. He said it was expected to reopen shortly.

Eight people were transported to the hospital after the crash.

San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said four people may have suffered life-threatening injuries.
