How’s SFPD doing fighting crimes on or around Muni? Recent coverage from KCBS takes a hopeful tone, reporting that “SFPD Reports Decline in Crime on MUNI*,” but the Examiner gives it to you rough and hard: “Muni tallies 300 crimes in 3 months.”
Both stories are basing their coverage off a SFPD report presented at yesterday’s Public Safety Committee meeting of the Board of Supervisors. The report says the crimiest lines are the 14-Mission, 38-Geary, 30-Stockton, T-Owl, 8x-Bayshore Express, 22-Fillmore, N-Judah and the F-Market, and that you’re most likely to be a victim of Muni-based crime between 3 and 6 PM.
I gotta tell you, that last bit surprised me — my guard is seriously up when I’m on the bus late at night, but in the middle of the afternoon, I’m not thinking crime. This is good to know!
Looking at those numbers, in the 84 days between January 1 and March 25 (the time period the report covered) there were, says Police Capt. Michael Biel, 304 crimes reported on Muni. That’s an average of 3.6 reported crimes a day. I don’t have anywhere else to go with that, just thought it was interesting to note that nearly 4 folks experience Muni crime every day. Which, I guess, yay?
*not to be the kind of overly literal tool I hate, but why do so many people cap “Muni”? Is it because the logo’s all in caps, or do people think it’s an acronym? “Making U Not Intime?” I am not good at that kind of thing, bet you can do better in the comments.
