primary_uscg.jpg9:09 PM: Authorities are continuing to investigate the death of a 28-year-old woman who went overboard from a ferry in the San Francisco Bay this morning, U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Simone Mausz said tonight.

At 9:17 a.m., the captain of an Alameda-Oakland Ferry vessel called the Peralta reported a possible person overboard west of Alameda Point, according to Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Jeremy Pichette.

The Coast Guard launched two vessels and a helicopter to search the area.

At 9:56 a.m., the helicopter crew spotted someone in the water south of Yerba Buena Island and west of Alameda Point in Oakland, Pichette said.

A small boat was directed to the area, where the crew recovered the woman from the water and began administering CPR.

The victim was taken to Pier 39, where she was pronounced dead.

Only two passengers were riding on the ferry when the woman went overboard, according to Ernest Sanchez, ferry manager for the city of Alameda.

The crew reported there were calm seas and normal operating conditions when she went overboard, Sanchez said.

Sanchez, who has worked for the ferry company for 20 years, said he didn’t know of any other fatalities the entire time he’d been there.

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the incident, and Sanchez said the ferry company is cooperating fully with investigators.
