San Francisco’s public works department is proposing a unique solution to graffiti-tagged commercial trucks it says are causing blight in some city neighborhoods: dark green paint.
The DPW announced a pilot program this week to paint over the white trucks–an “open canvas to graffiti vandals,” it said–with the color “transformer green.”
A $15,000 city grant funding the program will allow 15 trucks to be painted over, as long as the owners agree to keep graffiti off their vehicles in the future, the DPW said in a news release.
The department said that the green color has been found to be an effective deterrent on utility poles, trash bins and other public property.
San Francisco spends more than $20 million a year cleaning up graffiti, according to DPW Deputy Director Mohammed Nuru.
“A proactive, innovative program that focuses on graffiti prevention will help curb the spread of graffiti and can ease the financial burden for hard working business owners and taxpayers,” Nuru said.
