Police-Line-Tape-Do-Not-Cross-psd6657.png1:38 PM:Authorities are investigating the death of a male inmate who collapsed just after being booked into San Francisco County jail on Sunday, a sheriff’s department spokeswoman said today.

The man had been arrested at 10:35 a.m. Sunday in the 2200 block of Market Street and had just been booked into the jail at 1 p.m. on three counts of battery on a police officer, drug possession, trespassing, resisting arrest and criminal threats, spokeswoman Eileen Hirst said.

“During the booking process, he became very agitated and combative,” Hirst said. “He was placed in a safety cell and when checked on less than two minutes later, was found to be unresponsive.”

Sheriff’s deputies performed CPR and paramedics were called, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, Hirst said. The man was pronounced dead at about 5:50 p.m.
The cause of his death was not immediately clear.

“It would appear not to be suicide, but we await the medical examiner’s determination,” she said.

Hirst said a safety cell holds only one person.

Police, the medical examiner’s office and the sheriff’s department are each conducting their own investigations, Hirst said.

The man’s name has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
