The San Francisco medical examiner’s office today identified the victim of a fatal shooting Wednesday afternoon outside a Sunset District Vietnamese restaurant as 35-year-old Cuong Lu.

Lu, a San Francisco resident, was shot by another man shortly after 4:30 p.m. in front of the Pho Huynh Hiep 2 restaurant at 1833 Irving St., according to police.

Police spokesman Officer Boaz Mariles said Wednesday that Lu and the suspect had argued inside the restaurant shortly before the shooting.

“It started in the restaurant and then spilled out into the street, and that’s where the shooting took place,” Mariles said.

Two police officers saw the shooting, arrested the suspect and rendered aid to the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Mariles said.

Mariles said officers recovered the gun believed to have been used in the shooting.

The suspect’s name has not yet been released.

The section of Irving Street near 19th Avenue, a busy commercial and residential neighborhood in the Outer Sunset, has been the site of violence in the past.

In March 2008, a double-fatal shooting occurred outside Irving Pizza, just two doors down, at 1825 Irving St.

Wednesday’s shooting marks the ninth homicide in the city this year.
