A 39-year-old San Francisco man is being held today for the murder of another man Wednesday outside a Sunset District Vietnamese restaurant, police said.
Bao Luu was arrested at the scene of the 4:30 p.m. shooting in front of the Pho Huynh Hiep 2 restaurant at 1833 Irving St., according to police spokesman Sgt. Wilfred Williams.
Two officers saw the shooting and immediately arrested Luu, but were unable to revive the victim, 35-year-old Cuong Lu, also of San Francisco. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A gun believed used in the shooting was also recovered, police said.
Prosecutors today charged Luu with one count of murder with an allegation of the use of a firearm. He is expected to be arraigned in San Francisco Superior Court Friday morning.
Police would not discuss a possible motive for the killing today, but Williams said the suspect and the victim knew each other, and began arguing inside the restaurant.
The argument spilled outside, where Luu allegedly drew a gun and shot Lu, police said.
“It wasn’t a random act of violence, it was targeted,” Williams said.
The section of Irving Street near 19th Avenue, a busy commercial and residential neighborhood in the Outer Sunset, has been the scene of violence in the past.
In March 2008, a double fatal shooting occurred outside Irving Pizza, just two doors down, at 1825 Irving St.
Williams credited the quick work of the officers on Wednesday to detain the suspect.
“It’s unfortunate that this incident had to take place, but at the same time, we are very fortunate that no other individuals were injured,” he said.
Sheriff’s department spokeswoman Eileen Hirst said that in addition to the murder charge, a federal immigration hold has also been placed on Luu.
According to court records, Luu has an extensive arrest record in San Francisco dating back to 1993. His prior convictions include a 2003 conviction for drug possession for sale, for which he served a two-year prison term.
Wednesday’s shooting marks the ninth homicide in the city this year.
