Elsewhere: UCSF patient records possibly compromised Chron
A recently recovered laptop stolen from a University of California at San Francisco employee contained the confidential medical information of about 4,400 patients, the university said today.
The laptop was stolen from an employee at the university’s School of Medicine on Nov. 30 and recovered in Southern California on Jan. 8, according to the school.
The laptop contained “limited data” for certain patients treated at the UCSF Medical Center in 2008 and 2009, including name, medical record number, age and clinical information, the university said. It did not contain social security numbers or other financial data.
The university said that though there was no indication the files had been accessed, it began notifying patients earlier this month.

Other files from the employee’s previous employer, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, were also on the laptop, and that hospital also began notifying patients this month.
