Repairs to a 20-foot-wide sinkhole causing a one-lane street closure in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood are expected to be completed tonight, a public utilities spokesman said.
The sinkhole, which is about 8 feet deep, opened Saturday night after a water main break at 10th and Division streets. The area is near a five-street intersection underneath the city’s Central Freeway.
No injuries were reported.
Crews completed concrete work over the sinkhole this afternoon, and are now waiting for it to harden so that they can add an asphalt layer on top, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokesman Tyrone Jue said.
In the meantime, the one lane of westbound Brannan Street between Ninth and 10th streets remains blocked, according to Jue.
Crews hope to finish the repairs as early as 10 p.m. tonight, he said. Additional sidewalk repairs, which are not expected to impact traffic, are planned for Tuesday.
The age of the pipe, which was about 100 years old, combined with the cold weather, is believed to have caused it to break, according to Jue.
