Officials at Oakland International Airport this evening are investigating a possible jet fuel leak from a tank near Terminal 2, an airport spokesman said.
An airport employee smelled fuel near a group of tanks close to the terminal this afternoon, airport spokesman Robert Bernardo said. Officials this evening were continuing to investigate the odor and whether fuel had leaked from any of the tanks.
Bernardo said there is some concern that a fuel leak could reach the San Francisco Bay because the tanks are near a retention pond that filters storm water into the Bay.
Absorbent boom has been placed in the pond as a precaution to help contain any fuel that may have leaked.
U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Russell Nagle said his agency sent an incident management team to the area this afternoon and no fuel was spotted in the Bay.
Bernardo said the smell had dissipated by this evening and investigators expect to know the source of the odor by Tuesday morning.
The incident did not affect other operations at Oakland International Airport.
