It’s that time of the year again in San Francisco: the season of giving, family, and portable toilets going up in flames.
A spate of arson fires that destroyed 27 portable toilets late last fall and winter appears to have begun anew; four fires have occurred since mid-November, and investigators are without a clue as to who is responsible.
The only pattern appears to be that most of the arson fires have taken place in the north-central part of the city during the cold-weather months, mostly late at night or early in the morning, fire department spokeswoman Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.
The latest fire burned Monday night at Presidio Avenue and Clay Street. Another toilet was lit early Sunday in the 2200 block of Francisco Street in the Marina District.
The other two recent portable toilet arsons happened about two weeks ago in the 600 block of Haight Street and on Nov. 13 in the 1800 block of Broadway.
The 27 arson fires last winter occurred between Nov. 6 and Feb. 22.
Investigators have not identified any suspects, and no arrests have been made in connection with the 31 fires, according to police and the fire departments.
The blazes have not caused any injuries, but the portable toilets cost about $2,500 apiece and the fires can threaten nearby structures, according to the fire department.
