10:13 AM: A motorist was killed early this morning on Interstate Highway 280 in San Francisco after he ran over debris in the roadway, got out of his truck and was struck by a passing vehicle, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
The crash was reported on northbound Highway 280 at Ocean Avenue at about 2:25 a.m.
CHP spokesman Shawn Chase said the driver, a 58-year-old San Francisco man, ran over what was described as a beanbag chair in the fast lane. His 1996 Toyota Tacoma came to a stop between the fast lane and the No. 2 lane.
The driver got out of his truck and was standing beside it when a 41-year-old Daly City man driving a 2006 Toyota Tacoma swerved to avoid a box in the same area, Chase said.
The second driver then saw the stopped truck in front of him and slammed on his brakes but couldn’t avoid a collision, Chase said. He struck both the truck and the driver standing beside it.
The victim’s name has not yet been released by the medical examiner’s office.
Chase said alcohol was not believed to have played a role in the crash. The crash blocked the northbound lanes of the highway for nearly two hours.
6:29 AM: The California Highway patrol has reopened Interstate Highway 280 in San Francisco following a fatal crash this morning.
Units first responded to a report of a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 280 just south of Ocean Avenue at around 2:25 a.m., CHP Officer Robert Haven said.
Arriving units requested a medical examiner to confirm a fatality and required that the entire northbound side of the highway be shut down for the emergency response and investigation.
One person has been confirmed killed, Haven said, though the cause of the crash and number of vehicles involved is still being investigated.
Northbound lanes were blocked for nearly two hours. A Sig-alert was issued at 2:45 a.m. and canceled at 4:25 a.m.
3:06 AM: The California Highway Patrol has issued a Sig-alert for a mutli-vehicle crash blocking Interstate Highway 280 in San Francisco this morning.
CHP and fire units are responding to a crash reportedly involving several vehicles just south of Ocean Avenue on northbound Highway 280, CHP Officer Robert Haven said.
The crash was reported at 2:25 a.m. and a Sig-alert was issued at 2:45 a.m. All northbound lanes are currently blocked and injuries have been reported, Haven said.
