San Francisco hotel workers this morning ended the second in a series of three-day strikes as they attempt to negotiate a new contract.
About 350 workers at the Palace Hotel returned to their jobs today, but have called for a boycott of the hotel.
The workers will hold a demonstration tonight from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the hotel’s 100th anniversary gala to commemorate what their union Unite Here Local 2 calls “100 years of struggle” by working people to raise hotel industry standards.
The temporary strikes are intended to pressure hotel management amid continued negotiations. Thousands of workers have been without new contracts since Aug. 14.
According to the union, the main sticking points in the contract negotiations are retirement and health benefits.
A similar three-day strike took place last week by workers at the Grand Hyatt.
The union, which represents room cleaners, cooks, food servers, bellmen, bartenders and dishwashers, is negotiating separately with the owners of 61 San Francisco hotels, including Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, Starwood, Intercontinental and Fairmont.
Union members at 31 of those hotels authorized strikes on Oct. 22.
