Opening festivities today for the ice rink in San Francisco’s Union Square will feature snow and performances by members of the U.S. Figure Skating team.

The Safeway Holiday Ice Rink was scheduled to open at 10 a.m. A snow machine will drop snow onto the rink throughout the day, and members of the national figure skating team will perform at noon and at 5 p.m.

Rink spokeswoman Molly Blaisdell said the team had not yet announced who would be performing but that they would all be members of the team that will compete in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada.

The rink will be open to the general public between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., with 90-minute sessions beginning every two hours.

A special opening day offer is in effect until 6 p.m. Skaters can pay $20.10 for a package that includes a 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Team wristband, an “Olympic Moment” photo opportunity, and a 90-minute ice skating session with skate rental.

The national team will hold a VIP reception at 6 p.m. at the Westin St. Francis hotel at 335 Powell St.

The rink will be in place until Jan. 18. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
