11/20 10:40 AM: Authorities have identified the victim of a solo-vehicle fatal crash early Thursday morning in San Francisco’s South of Market District as 31-year-old Darren Harrell.

Police and the medical examiner’s office said the San Francisco resident lost control of his car in the 1100 block of Mission Street, at Julia Street, hit a utility pole and then crashed into a building.

The crash occurred at about 12:20 a.m. Harrell, the car’s only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police spokesman Officer Samson Chan said the utility pole “was pretty much toppled over” by the impact of Harrell’s car.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

11/19 2:34 AM: San Francisco police this morning are investigating a fatal crash on city streets in the South of Market District.

Units responded to a report of a solo-vehicle crash in the 1100 block of Mission Street at around 12:20 a.m., police said.

Arriving officers found a man critically injured in a crash, police said. The driver and apparent sole occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary information indicates the driver lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons and struck an object – possibly a utility pole or a building – and was killed, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
