The part of the bridge that is broken isn't required for a bus to get from SF to Treasure Island.

Not to sound like a SFGate commenter, but have you been on the Bay Bridge?
It's really 2 completely different bridges separated by a tunnel through an island.

Exactly right. The western span (suspension bridge) is a completely separate bridge (2 suspension bridges actually, if you want to get technical) that are structurally and seismically sound. It's the Eastern span (cantilever bridge) that is seismically unsound, hence the replacement bridge being built just north of it.
This failure occurred on the Eastern span, which connects TI to the East Bay. Muni does not use it.

Never! I have NEVER BEEN ON THE BAY BRIDGE. Look, when some spokesperson says the damage might have implications for the entire bridge, it seems worth asking the question. Maybe you don't think so! And that is fine. Have fun on the Bridge and please do tell me what it's like BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER BEEN.

Transportation in the Bay Area is real delicate. There's been three bridge shutdowns in the past two months, and every single day we experience fender-benders on any thoroughfare that impedes reaching our destinations oftentimes by hours. Maybe now is not the right time to think about shortening your daily commute (especially if you need to cross the bay tomorrow), but really, with this "green" trend and internet broadband, folks, we need to make our daily individual physical habitats a lot smaller. We got to think about why we live in the East Bay, yet party and do service sector work in San Francisco, when we should just live where we do our schmuck. And if we're in hi-tek we got to install Camtasia and Skype and tell the boss "we don't need to be in the same barn at the same time every single bloody day, dogg." Hey, didn't we all see U2 on yoU2ube live in concert? There ya' go.
